AIR INDIA FLIGHT 182

On June 23, 1985, Air India Flight 182 was destroyed by a bomb over the Atlantic Ocean, 190 km of the coast of Ireland, killing all 329 people on board.

The Flight 182 was a scheduled international passenger flight from Montreal Mirabel International Airport, Canada to Sahar International Airport, Bombay, India, with intermediate stops planned at London Heathrow Airport, United Kingdom and Palam International Airport, Delhi, India. The aircraft involved was a Boeing 747-237B, registered as VT-EFO.

The aircraft disintegrated in midair, at an altitude of 9 400 m, as a result of the explosion from a bomb planted by Canadian Sikh militants known commonly as Khalistanis. An explosion occurred in the forward cargo compartment, causing a rapid decompression. The aft portion of the aircraft separated from the forward portion before striking the water. The remnants of the airliner fell into the ocean approximately 190 km west-southwest of the southwest tip of Ireland.
