SCANDINAVIAN AIRLINES FLIGHT 686

On October 8, 2001, Scandinavian Airlines Flight 686 collided on takeoff with a Cessna Citation CJ2 business jet at Linate Airport in Milan, Italy. All 110 people on board the Flight 686 were killed. Also all 4 people on board the business jet were killed, as well as 4 people on the ground, making total number of fatalities to 118. The accident happened in thick fog, with visibility reduced to less than 200 metres.

The Flight 686 was a scheduled international flight from Milan Linate Airport, Italy to Copenhagen Kastrup Airport, Denmark. The aircraft involved was a McDonnell Douglas MD-87, registered as SE-DMA. The pilot-in-command was captain Joakim Gustafsson, and the first officer was Anders Hyllander. Both pilots were killed in the accident.

The business jet entered the active runway 36R by mistake, while the Flight 686 was on its takeoff roll. The Flight 686 collided with Cessna, and after that, it crashed into a luggage hangar located near the runway's end. The crash and subsequent fire killed four ground personnel in the hangar, and injured four more.
