BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT BOEING 737 MAX
The Boeing 737 MAX is a narrow-body aircraft series. It is the fourth generation of the Boeing 737, succeeding the Boeing 737 Next Generation (NG). The 737 MAX is based on earlier 737 designs, re-engined with more efficient CFM International LEAP-1B engines, aerodynamic changes (including distinctive split-tip winglets), and airframe modifications.
The first flight took place on January 29, 2016, and the first delivery was to Malindo Air on May 16, 2017.
By March 2019, the 737 MAX had been involved in two fatal accidents within five months, raising safety concerns and prompting airline users and regulators around the world to ground the aircraft. In both accidents, attention focused on the 737 MAX's new Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS), which can automatically lower the aircraft nose when a sensor indicates that a stall may be imminent. Satellite tracking data showed that after takeoff, both aircraft experienced extreme fluctuations in vertical speed. Pilots in both aircraft radioed they had flight control problems and wanted to return to the airport.
First of these accidents happened on October 29, 2018, when Lion Air Flight 610 crashed into the Java Sea 12 minutes after takeoff from Jakarta-Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Indonesia, killing all 189 people on board. It was the first major accident involving the new Boeing 737 MAX series aircraft. The aircraft involved was a Boeing 737 MAX 8. The aircraft was delivered new to Lion Air on August 13, 2018. At the time of the accident, the aircraft had flown about 800 hours in service.
Second accident happened on March 10, 2019, when Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashed near the town of Bishoftu, six minutes after takeoff from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport in Ethiopia, killing all 157 people aboard. The aircraft was a Boeing 737 MAX 8. The aircraft was delivered new to Ethiopian Airlines on November 15, 2018.
