BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT CONVAIR CV-240 FAMILY
The Convair CV-240 is an airliner that Convair manufactured from 1947 to 1954. Featuring a more modern design with cabin pressurization, the CV-240 series made some inroads as a commercial airliner, and had a long development cycle that produced various civil and military variants.
The CV-240 made its first flight in March 16, 1947, and the first production was delivered to American Airlines on February 29, 1948. The Model CV-240 was followed by the Model CV-340, which had a longer fuselage, longer-span wings, and more powerful engines. The CV-340 first flew on October 5, 1951. In 1954 Convair produced the Model CV-440 Metropolitan, with more streamlined cowlings, new engine exhausts, and better cabin soundproofing. CV-440 Metropolitan first flew on October 6 1955.
The worst accident to CV-240 family aircraft happened in Tomonoco, Bolivia on October 27, 1975, when Transporte Aéreo Militar operated Convair CV-440 Metropolitan crashed in the Cerro Colorado mountains, after failing to gain height due to overloading, killing all 67 people on board.
