BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT LOCKHEED ELECTRA
The Lockheed Model 10 Electra is a twin-engined, all-metal monoplane airliner. The prototype made its first flight on February 23, 1934. The Lockheed Model 12 Electra Junior is a smaller version of the Model 10. The Model 12 made its first flight on June 27, 1936. The Lockheed Model 14 Super Electra is a scaled-up version of the original Model 10, and was also developed into larger, more capable civil and military versions. The Model 14 made its first flight on July 29, 1937, and entered commercial service with Northwest Airlines in October 1937.
The Lockheed L-188 Electra is a turboprop airliner. It was the first large turboprop airliner built in the United States. The prototype first flew on December 6, 1957, and the first delivery to Eastern Air Lines was on October 8, 1958. The Lockheed P-3 Orion is a four-engine turboprop anti-submarine and maritime surveillance aircraft, developed for the United States Navy. It is based on the L-188 Electra. The Lockheed P-3 Orion has been in continual front-line service for more than 50 years.
The worst accident to Lockheed Electra line aircraft happened on December 18, 1995, when Trans Service Airlift operated L-188 Electra crashed near Jamba, Angola. Of the 144 people on board, 141 were killed. The plane was heavily overloaded.
